The objective of the Diderot Plate Study was to develop representational and modeling skills with an artistic interpretation of mechanics and movement.
The plate shown below is an illustration of Grosses Forges, Lavage de la Mine, or Large Forge: Mine Washing. This human-scale contraption was used to clean iron ore in 18th century France.

The final analytique explored the movement of gears, highlighting the contrast between static and dynamic, as well as the symmetry of the machine. The water and workers bring the final illustration to life, showing the gears have no purpose without them.
